If you’ve never had an ECG Holter test before, you are likely wondering what to expect. The good news is your test is completely pain-free, and you won’t be connected to a static machine. You will have the freedom to move about and even wash throughout the duration of the test, lasting up to 7 days. Our state-of-the-art ECG patch monitor links up via a smart phone app so you can even view your reading in real time.

Some home heart monitors on the market are fiddly to fit and, often need repeating because they haven’t been positioned accurately to collect a clear recording of your heartbeat. ECG At Home, our ECG Holter patch tests, come with easy-to-follow instructions showing you exactly how to fit it and your device is equipped with clear indicator lights to reassure you that your test is in place and working. A member of our team is also at the other end of the telephone to talk you through fitting it, if needed.

So, what can you expect when you order your ECG Holter test?

When you order your test, you’ll speak to a member of our team who will take a brief medical history from you before posting out your test with full, easy-to-follow step-by-step fitting instructions. Telephone support is available to assist with fitting, if required.

You keep your ECG device on throughout the duration of the test – ideally for 7 days. The longer you wear it the more accurate the results, but wear it for at least 24 hours. You can sleep with your test device on and can keep it on in the shower (but not the bath).

When your test is finished, you simply remove the device and pop it back to us in the pre-paid envelope. Our cardiology team will analyse the recording straight away and email their findings. The Cardiology doctor will then go through the report in detail with you on a call.

What will you be able to see from my ECG test?

ECG At Home tests are highly sophisticated devices that, unlike others, are capable of recording every single heartbeat throughout your test. The date collected may look something like the reading above. The image shows a healthy reading. You can see the regular pattern trace indicating each heartbeat. Our cardiology team will be looking out for any irregularities, no matter how minimal, which could indicate a potential problem with your heart health.

By contrast, this is the reading of a patient with what is known as Atrial Fibrillation, which is an irregular and often very fast heart rate. This may cause symptoms like heart palpitations, fatigue, and shortness of breath. You can clearly see the difference between the two readings, but they are not always so obvious and require a medically-trained expert eye to detect any abnormalities that may indicate a wide range of conditions.

How soon will I get my results?

The length of each test will depend upon your unique situation, the symptoms you experience and the regularity of their occurrence. All tests must be fitted and activated for at least 24 hours. We recommend you wear your test for as long as possible up to 7 days. Once your test has been carried out, you can expect to hear back from our team with your results within 72 hours. Our consultant cardiologist will go through the results with you over the phone or on a video call and give you all the information you need for your GP.
